PROJECT SUMMARY:
Here crews were to create embankments to support a bridge and
off-ramp in a congested area of St. Louis near Cheauteau Bridge
where the Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroads cross
New Line Industrial Boulevard. Existing conditions
essentially closed off access to a portion of this vital
business area and improved traffic access had to be created.
PROJECT SOLUTION:
To support embankments for the new bridge construction over
Manchester Road, Ideal crews used Champion Pre-Cast panels
designed by the Reinforced Earth Company to clad the retaining
walls. The face of this project is noticeably more
decorative than the more modest panels specified in the
construction of Metrolink, Facilities 2.
This area was filled
with approximately 50,000 tons of manufactured sand has great
drainage properties.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Engineers expected 3 to 5 inches of settlement during the
project, which was significant. This required a
significant waiting period as settling was monitored.
Another obstacle to construction was the unexpected location of
an old, but still in-service, sanitary sewer line owned by the
City of St. Louis. In order not to crush this line with
the weight of construction a special load-bearing concrete slab was
added for protection.
