| APPROX VALUE: |
$800,000+ |
| DURATION: |

PROJECT SUMMARY:
Replacement of a failed Hercules wall due to poor drainage of
groundwater and poor craftsmanship of the previous contractors
and original engineers. The wall had collapsed,
endangering a supported roadway atop the wall funneling heavy
retail traffic to nearby Costco and Target.
PROJECT SOLUTION:
Specially made Alpenstien wall blocks were manufactured
specifically for this re-build. Of the 10,000 square foot
area, 8,000 cubic yards of material were removed and over
15,000 tons of Grade 5 backfill (specially manufactured stone)
were trucked onto the site. Engineering designs were done
by Reitz and Jens of St. Louis and supervised by Novac
Construction.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Major obstacles during this project were the proximity to the
road, partially supported by the structure, and the continued
flow of traffic. Another major concern was to ensure
proper drainage of the wall. Improper drainage most
likely contributed greatly to the failure of the first wall.
Additionally a major cross-country AT&T fiber optic line ran
parallel to the site. Severing it could have meant disrupted
telephone service to thousands of customers. With most
projects of this scope, there were also the normal hazards of
power lines, buried sewer pipes, and the like.
