PROJECT SUMMARY:
More than 1500 feet of hillside between Compton Avenue and
Ewing Avenue was eroding. During times of heavy rain soil
would run down the hillside and infiltrate the existing
Metrolink tracks, slowing the trains. This project had
nothing to do with the Cross County Extension.
PROJECT SOLUTION:
Pre-cast panel walls were built along the hillside to stop
erosion. Panels were 3 feet by 15 feet in size. A
drainage pipe was added to catch water from the tracks and a
swale was constructed to catch water from along the hillside.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
A major concern during the duration of this project was
safety. Metrolink trains run on an 800 volt DC current,
different than the AC current used in households. During
construction Ideal excavation equipment would have to come
dangerously close to these lines. All members of the
construction team as well as project managers attended safety
classes regarding this specific hazard. An additional
requirement was a flagman to slow the trains as they approached
the construction site
